Is Critical Thinking a Transferable Skill to Success?

If you completed this week’s assignments, you spend hours in job search engines looking for an ideal position when you graduate right? In my case, I spent at least 3 hours browsing through those engines comparing and looking for similarities about what an ideal job would look like to me.

One of the most common skills that companies are looking out there for potential employees is critical thinking, and the most important thing is that no matter what your major is, whether in business, medicine, computer science, design, architecture, etc. critical thinking is a non-negotiable skill that companies consider a must.

According to Megan Stone in her book Own your education! Critical thinking is defined as “a broad set of skills that allows you to objectively question, analyze, and evaluate information with an open mind and to draw conclusions based on logic and credible evidence.” 1. Developing critical thinking will help you to succeed not just on your educational path, but also in your career plans. Working for any company in the future would mean meeting deadlines, developing deliverables, partnering with cross-functional teams, or finding solutions to any problem on the daily basis, and any of these tasks will require us to critically think to work through them.

Applying the main principles of critical thinking (open-mindedness, objectivity, and purposefulness) in school courses is a good starting point to develop and enhance the skill. Sandra Tech in this week’s video mentioned the relevance of “transferable skills”2 when applying for a job and critical thinking is a transferable skill that will help us to thrive on any career path we decide to follow in the future.

“Owing your critical thinking since now will help you to stand out in a competitive world.”

  4. Hi Priscilla, I think this is a great post. Being able to demonstrate critical thinking is a skill that truly every job should look for. Being able to think for yourself and create your own deep thoughts and questions is something that is always wanted.

  5. Hi Priscilla,
I agree with you that critical thinking is one of most "transferable" skills. I cannot think of a single job that doesn't require some level of it. If anything, it an unofficial requirement for nearly all jobs. Great Job!
